Overview
Kano State has been a commercial and agricultural state, which is known for the production of groundnuts as well as for its solid mineral deposits. The state has more than 18,684 square kilometres of cultivable land and is the most extensively irrigated state in the country.
Most of the people of Kano depend on agriculture for their livelihood. In the pre-colonial period Kano was considered as the garden of the Central Africa with the potential of feeding the whole area.
Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) supported by the World Bank is aimed at assisting 10,000 participating small and medium scale commercial farmers to access improved technology, finance, infrastructure and output markets in Kano State.
Small and medium commercial farms will benefit directly while many households will benefit indirectly through access to farm roads, energy and markets opportunities. The beneficiaries are in business in the selected value chains and have already been aggregated into informal Commodity Interest Groups (CIGs).
Value Chain
The selected agricultural value chains for Kano state billed for promotion under the project are Rice, Maize and Dairy.
